Meet The Staff

Dr. Whitley

Chief Vascular Surgeon

Experience:

Dr. Whitley is the President and founder of The Vascular Institute of Birmingham. He began his medical training in general surgery at Georgetown University and later developed a keen interest in the area of vascular surgery. He completed vascular surgery fellowships at The Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Whitley then went on staff at Brown University where he was the director of the ultrasound laboratory. Later, he joined the staff at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.

In 2003, Dr. Whitley decided to make a move to St. Vincent’s where he had been in the exclusive practice of vascular surgery. In 2023, he decided to move his surgery practice to Grandview Medical Center. He has received many honors and is a member of numerous prestigious surgical societies. He holds board certification in vascular surgery and general surgery from the American Board of Surgery. He is the author of more than 70 papers and book chapters on vascular surgery. He has been the invited lecturer at number meetings throughout the United States and Europe. He has over 25 years of experience treating vascular disorders.

Why did you go into the vascular field?

Dr. Whitley says, “I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a physician. I became fascinated with the vascular field and the diseases. I think it is the most exciting field in surgery!”

What sets The Vascular Institute of Birmingham apart from other offices?

The Vascular Institute of Birmingham is a group of university trained surgeons. Here, we are a practice that is diverse in surgical techniques. 

We have a wonderful staff and top notch ultrasound labs for diagnosing the vascular disease. Our outpatient center is very capable of having in-house procedures. In return, this saves our patients time, money, and convenience. 

Why did you go into the vascular field?

Dr. Harvey chose the vascular field because of the technical difficulty that was required. He was enticed by the challenge. Additionally, Dr. Harvey has had a lot of his own family that has dealt with vascular issues. This helped inspire him to choose this field.

Dr. Harvey

Vascular Surgeon

Experience:

Dr. Harvey attended medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After five years of residnecy in general surgery at the Univeristy of Tennessee at Memphis, Dr. Harvey focused his training in the area of vascular surgery. He completed fellowships at The Arizona Heart Institute and the University of Tennessee.

In 1998, Dr. Harvey went on staff at Norwood Clinic as a vascular surgeon. He remained there for ten years and then joined The Vascular Institute of Birmingham in 2008. Dr. Harvey is Board Certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of numerous prestigious surgical societies. Dr. Harvey has traveled extensively and lectured on various aspects of diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease. He has over 22 years of experience in the treatment of venous disorders.

Skill Set:

Lower arterial work is one of Dr. Harvey’s specialties. He has done hundreds of revascularizations. Dr. Harvey is very appreciative of the advancements in medical technology.

Dr. Quinney

Vascular Surgeon

Experience:

Dr. Quinney received his undergraduate degree at the University of Alabama in 1999. He attended medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham from 2000 to 2004. He did his general surgery residency from 2004 to 2009 at UAB and vascular surgery fellowship at UAB from 2009 to 2011.

Dr. Quinney married his wife Sarah in 2005 while in residency. She is from Birmingham and is a graduate of Samford University and is a nurse practitioner at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Do you have any moments you reflect upon during your time as a vascular surgeon?

Dr. Quinney says, “Yes, I had one patient who had 3 procedures prior to seeing me. He was told he needed a leg amputation. After he visited me we ended up helping him with a vascular procedure. He taught me to keep an open mind and that there is always something we can do for patients before amputation gets brought up.”

Sarah Song, Lead Sonographer, RVT

Sarah has three registries in Abdomen, OBGYN and Vascular Ultrasound and Vascular is her favorite modality. She comes to the practice with various experiences by working at hospitals, which gave her a strong foundation.

Sarah loves to laugh and help patients with great manner. 

Atalie Whitley, CRNA

Office Manager/CRNA

Atalie Whitley, CRNA, is both the anesthesia provider and office manager for the Vascular Institute. She has over two decades of experience in patient care and administration.

Ricky Morris

Scrub Tech

Ricky assists with surgeries, travels between hospitals, and works in the lab. Ricky has been working with Dr. Whitley for almost two decades. 

Michelle Bagley, CRNP

Michelle Bagley, CRNP

Michelle is the Nurse Practitioner at The Vascular Institute of Birmingham. She comes to us with decades of experience in patient care and serves as a very valuable member of the team.

Leeann Vincent, RN

Leeann Vincent, RN

Leeann graduated from the paramedic program at Bevill State Sumiton in 2006, passed the National Registry and became licensed in Alabama NREMT-P the same year.

In 2011, she completed the Surgical Technology Program at Bevill State Sumiton and began working as a surgical scrub tech. After years of working in surgery, she decided to pursue a career in nursing. She completed her goal and in 2018 she graduated with a nursing degree from Gadsden State. Leeann has vast experience in patient care, ranging from critical care in the field and the emergency room to managing patients in the office based setting. Leeann is the keystone to the care patients receive in this practice.

Lauren Sizemore

Billing and Access Coordinator

Lauren works in the billing department to ensure claims are filed properly and in a timely manner. She is a valuable resource for both the physicians and the patients when it comes to insurance rules and coverage. Lauren has been a member of our team for six years, but became full time when she graduated from the University of Alabama. 

Hannah Leopard

Medical Assistant, Scheduling Coordinator

Hannah comes to the practice with a plethora of experience in office management and patient care.

Receptionist

Tamikal is a vital part of the practice and greets each patient and visitor with a warm smile and personality.
